Description
NEW YORK/OHIO, 1835-1903 An oil on board farm genre painting by John Henry Dolph. The work depicts a brood of hens outside of a chicken coop with two hens in the foreground near a galvanized water bowl with a pigeon perched on its rim. Notice the alertness and naturalistic detail of the standing chicken with a finally formed beak, comb, and wattle. Four hens are seen in the background, two rummaging in the shade beneath shrubbery and two in the entryway of the coupe. Dolph was later famed for his portraits and genre paintings of cats and dogs. This farm scene is part of a transitional time in his career from 1865 to 1870 after moving to New York. The work is signed in the lower left corner with a conjoined "JH Dolph".
