John Austin Monks
Massachusetts, Illinois,1850-1917
Depicts a herd of sheep resting in a dark barn alongside chickens eating from a toppled over bucket housed in a finely carved Motyka frame. Monks studied etching with George Nelson Cass and painting with George Inness. He was a member of the Boston Art Club, Copley Society, and the New York Etching Club.
Oil on canvas,Canvas 16" x 24".Frame 22 3/8" x 29 1/4"
Signed "JAS Monks" lower left corner.

Minor wear by rabbet, canvas may benefit from re stretching, minor stretcher marks, area of paint loss lower left on sheep, red paint spot, frame with minor surface wear and losses to gilt, otherwise good condition.
