Mark Tobey

Abstract composition of mottled green, yellow, orange and cream Tobey attended watercolor and oil painting classes at the Art Institute of Chicago for a brief time, moving to New York to continue to teach himself to paint as well as work as a fashion illustrator, portraitist, and caricaturist. In 1918, Tobey turned to the Bahai faith in which meditative and scriptural exercises began to influence his work. Tobey began travelling and found himself in Japan and China where he became interested in Zen Buddhism, which inspired him to create his most famous White Writings after calligraphy practices. His works can be found in museums across the US and abroad.
