Description
AMERICAN UNION PORCELAIN WORKS "HEATHEN CHINEE" PITCHER, having light blue ground with raised white dry-bodied embossed designs of King Gambrinus and Brother Jonathan (predecessor to Uncle Sam) on one side and a depiction of a scene from a poem having a Chinese man named Ah Sin cheating at cards and threatened by a miner named Bill Nye; design sometimes referred to as the "Building of the Railroad" design; animal figure on handle and modeled as spout; polychrome enamels on decorative edging and base. Impressed "U.P.W." on one side and additional "MANUFACTURED / BY / UNION / PORCELAIN / WORKS / GREENPOINT, N.Y." on base. Karl L.H. Mueller, Union Porcelain Works, Greenpoint, New York. Circa 1880. 9 5/8" H.
One small shallow chip to underside interior of spout , and some wear to enamel, particular on front of rim and spout.
