Item Details
Description
Roman, Imperial Period, North Africa, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. A deep thrown circular redware bowl with a reinforced rim and smooth side walls. A matching lid with a slight, protruding knob handle fits nicely onto its top. A beautiful red engobe slip pigment covers the surface, especially thick on the body of the vessel. This style of pottery is known as African Terra Sigilata, referring to the method used to seal the red slip onto the pottery during the kilning process. These objects were traded far and wide throughout the Roman Empire. Size: 8.125" W x 4.125" H (20.6 cm x 10.5 cm)

Provenance: private New York, USA collection; ex collection Prof. Dr. Günther Marschall (1913 - 1997), Hamburg, Germany; ex Kunsthaus Lempertz, Cologne, Germany Auction 490, 1966
