Description
Greco-Roman period, found in the Adriatic Sea, ca. 2nd century BCE. A large pottery transport amphora with applied handles and a pointed base. This is a Lamboglia type, made to ship and store wine. Amphorae formed the basis of the Classical economy - storage vessels for transporting goods throughout the Greek and Roman worlds, with examples found from North Africa to Britain. Many of them met the same fate as this one, lost at sea. As a result, this example is encrusted with sea life, mostly white shells with a silvery irisdescence from age. Size: 12.25" W x 26.25" H (31.1 cm x 66.7 cm); 31" H (78.7 cm) on included custom stand.
