Marguerite Freytag Ciprico (California, Germany, 1891 - 1973) California coastal landscape painting. Oil on canvas. Inscribed verso. Sight Size: 11.5 x 15.5 in. Marguerite Freytag immigrated to San Francisco during the aftermath of the disaster of 1906. Her art studies were begun locally with Theodore Wores, Eugen Neuhaus, Arthur Putnam, and at the San Francisco Institute of Art (1908-12). She then returned to Europe for further study in Munich, Milan, Paris, and with Anders Zorn. At the outbreak of WWI she returned to San Francisco and worked as a commercial artist, including portraits for the society column in the Chronicle. After marrying in 1923, she moved down the peninsula to Burlingame where she painted many landscapes of the surrounding area. She was a close friend and painting partner of William Hubaceck who greatly influenced her still life work. Mrs. Ciprico died in Burlingame, CA on Nov. 8, 1973. Exh: Calif.
