Description
1789 1st ed Doctrine of Miracles Angelic vs Demonic George Hay Catholic Church Martyrs 2v
A rare devotional and spiritual formation book by George Hay, an 18th-century Bishop of Daulis. While in prison in Edinburgh, he heard a defense of the Catholic religion for the first time and was taken in awe. He began publishing works of Catholic doctrine and also published the first English Catholic Bible printed in Scotland.
This book, “Doctrine of Miracles,” discusses the origins of miracles, criteria for an act being called a miracle, how they are performed, who performs them, and whether or not they are of God or of Satan -
“If the doctrine be undoubtedly bad, and contrary to the known truth; the miracle wrought in its favour is undoubtedly a false miracle, and done by the operation of Satan.” (Hay, v. 1, p. 345)
Hay also references early church father’s and their influence with miracles – mentions of St. Ambrose, St. Chrysostom, St. Gervasius and Protasius, St. Anthony, and other important church martyrs.
