Description
THIS IS THE REAL, ORIGINAL MOSS AGATE by Stevens and Williams ca. 1895. Moss Agate was the result of a technique developed at Stevens and Williams by John Northwood where a paraison of soda glass is encased in lead glass and then lightly marvered with selected powdered colors. After the shape is formed the soda glass core is flushed with cold water to produce a crackle glass inner surface, and this is further reheated to fuse the crackles together. Moss Agate was made by Frederick Carder at Steuben subsequent to 1903, but surprisingly Carder modified the original formulation to showcase much brighter and free flowing wavelike color schemes. Carder never duplicated, or perhaps he preferred not to emulate John Northwood's original look, but the fact is that the Steuben Moss agate examples never achieved the delicacy of those of Stevens and Williams.**** THE (2) MOST RECENT MAJOR AUCTION RESULTS FOR MOSS AGATE ARE BOTH BY STEUBEN, THE MOST RECENT AT JAMES JULIA IN THE FORM OF A 10 1/2" VASE SOLD ON JUNE 18,2008 FOR $17,825!!!
