Edgar Mitchell (American, 1930-2016)
Alan Shepard and the American flag, EVA 1, Apollo 14, February 1971. Numbered 'NASA AS14-66-9232' (NASA MSC) in red on the recto u.l. margin. Vintage chromogenic print on fiber-based Kodak paper with 'A Kodak Paper' watermark on the verso, image size 7 1/8 x 7 in. (18.0 x 17.5 cm), unmatted.
Condition: Stains on the verso u.c. and l.c.
N.B. Despite all the things that he had previously heard from fellow astronauts, Shepard was still startled by the blackness of the lunar scene. "It certainly is a stark place here at Fra Mauro," he said. "I think it's made all the more stark by the fact that the sky is completely black" (Apollo 14 air-to-ground transmission).
