Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Guerrero region, Mezcala, ca. 500 to 200 BCE. An impressive anthropomorphic stone axe god of M-16 to M-18 variety, carved from a deep grey-green stone with minimally incised, stylized facial features, squared jaw and shoulders, and characteristically stylized limbs - eyes drilled and perhaps once inlaid with shell. The Mezcala specialized in abstracting human physiognomy using string-cut technology, and saying so much through line and volume. Custom stand. Size: 6" H (15.2 cm)
