Description
Near East / the Holy Land, Byzantine Empire, ca. 5th to 8th century CE. A half-spherical, bowl-shaped oil lamp carved from marble. The bowl has a scalloped rim with four round perforations drilled at regular intervals around it. The marble is a deep cream color, with thin bands of grey and black through it. A rare form of oil lamp. Size: 3.45" W x 1.4" H (8.8 cm x 3.6 cm)
Provenance: private Carlton collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired between 1965 and 1980
