Description
Roman Empire, Augustus, Rome, 27 BCE to 14 CE. OBVERSE: Laureated head of Augustus facing right, inscription around. REVERSE: Caius and Lucius Caesar's togate stand facing, each resting hand on a round shield with spear behind, above center a lituus (left) and simpulum (right). Compare RIC I 208, RSC 43c. Size: 3.69 grams, 19 mm.
Augustus, who ruled from 27 BCE until his death in 14 CE was the first Roman Emperor. His reign was relatively peaceful and was known as the Pax Romana, "The Roman Peace". For more than two centuries the Roman world was largely free from large-scale conflicts, despite continuous wars of imperial expansion on the Empire's frontiers and the year-long civil war known as the "Year of the Four Emperors" over the imperial succession.
