During the Roman Republic coins were not produced by the government, but instead were minted by individuals called "moneyers". In Italian they were called tresviri aere argento auro flando feriundo, literally "three men for casting (and) striking bronze, silver (and) gold (coins)". These magistrates were responsible for the production of the Roman coinage. The moneyers were not simple mint workers but instead they were officials who controlled the entire coin making process, including the design on their coins.
