Item Details
Description
East Asia, Japan, Hokkaido (northern island), ca. 400 million years ago. A cluster of ammonites - at least nine - with some other extinct sea animals. Two are very large and well-preserved, the darker of the two with gorgeous frondescent casts on its face. Ammonites are an extinct marine mollusk related to the living coleoid family, including octopus and squid. The name "ammonite" came from Pliny the Elder after the Egyptian god Ammon, who was typically depicted wearing ram's horns that Pliny thought these fossils resembled. Hokkaido is famous for its ammonites, especially those from around the Ezo group stratum that stretches north to south across the island. Size: 8.5" W x 11.5" H (21.6 cm x 29.2 cm)

Provenance: private Illinois, USA collection
