Description
Extremely Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Cream Jar with Cobalt Horse Head Decoration, Stamped "WHITES UTICA," New York State origin, circa 1865, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, flatttened rim, and applied lug handles, the front decorated with a large brushed design of a horse head with bridle, mane, and heavily-spotted neck. Cobalt highlight to maker's mark. Excellent size and desirable maker. Possibly the only example of Whites Utica stoneware bearing this decoration known. Wear or fry to cobalt spots on horse's neck. Large section reglued on reverse with a 4" crack extending downward from it. An additional 3 1/4" crack from on reverse. Rim chip. Glazed-over handle chip. Two base chips on reverse, which appear to be in-the-firing.
