Description
Three Northeastern U.S. Stoneware Articles, circa 1800-1830, an extremely rare small-sized jug, stamped "R P TOLMAN / DORCHESTEr", possibly an unknown maker's mark use made by a relative of potter, Henry Tolman (1783-1851); a one-gallon jug with cobalt-highlighted handle terminals and maker's mark, stamped "A. STATES", Stonington, CT origin; and an unmarked oyster jar. Literature: For discussion of the potter, Henry Tolman, and associated potters, see Watkins, Early New England Potters and Their Wares, p. 42, 81, 91, 95, 116, 197, and 268. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market lot, purchased by the consignor decades ago. Tolman jug in excellent, essentially as-made condition. States jug with shallow spout chips, a minor base chip, and some light wear to midsection. Oyster jar in excellent, essentially as-made condition with minor in-the-firing chipping to base. H (of Tolman jug) 8 1/4".
