The principal figure—"woman"—is believed to be Harriet Tubman leading a child of slaves under the cover of darkness to freedom on the Underground Railroad.This painting is believed to be a very early statement by a celebrated African-American folk artist against the evils of slavery and the travails of those escaping from its horrendous clutches held against their will. Clementine Hunter was a child haunted by the horrors of her ancestry reminded of her family's enslavement on plantations in deep, southern Louisiana where she spent her early years.
