Painting depicts Uncle Tom and Eliza from Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin. Clementine Hunter was born on Hidden Hill Plantation, owned by the notoriously cruel Robert McAlpin, said to be the model for Simon Legree in Stowe's anti-slavery novel, Uncle Tom's Cabin. Hidden Hill Plantation was later renamed Little Eva Plantation, after a character in the novel. In the early 1900's, Clementine's father moved the family to Melrose Plantation.
