Rafael Canogar

Abstract expressionist mixed media on paper, dated 1966, by Spanish artist Rafael Canogar.
Rafael Canogar was born in Toledo in 1935. A painter and sculptor Canogar is counted among the proponents of expressionism and abstract painting.
In 1957, Canogar founded the group 'El Paso' in Madrid along with other artists, whose works showed an influence of the 'Action Painting'.
From 1965 to 1966, Canogar was a professor at the Mills College in Oakland.
In 1972, he won the first prize of the IX Biennale of Sao Paulo, Brazil.
This work is dates from the time when the artist was teaching at in Oakland, CA and comes from the collection of another former professor at Mills College.
