Description
Egypt, Late Period, ca. 700 to 30 BCE. An ancient Egyptian polychrome painted and gilded mummy wrapping. The upper register contains a winged solar disk flanked by uraei. Below stands Osiris before a tray of offerings wearing the atef crown and holding a crook and flail. He is flanked by the goddesses Isis and Nephtys each holding an ankh. Below is a Ba Bird with wings outstretched. Set in a custom mount. Size: 16" L x 8" W x 32" H (40.6 cm x 20.3 cm x 81.3 cm); 34" H (86.4 cm) on included custom stand.
These iconographically rich mummy wrappings are comprised of gesso (a mixture of chalk, pigment, and gypsum) over wide linen strips. Using a plastered surface like this formed a more stable surface for painting traditional Egyptian funerary symbols. By the time of the Late Dynastic period, the elaborate funerary rituals and furniture of the Egyptian grave were associated with not only the elite, but others as well, representing a newfound democratization of death, and opening up access to privileged religious and afterlife-ensuring rituals to many more members of the society.
Provenance: formerly in the collection of Dr. Del, Paris, acquired between 1960 and 1980
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
