Black new half leather in style of the time with green engraved spine title. - The ichthyological results of a famous deep-sea expedition to the northeastern Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea. The paddle steamer Travailleur sailed on July 17, 1880 from Bayonne, surveyed the Bay of Biscay and returned to port on August 1st. Among the scientists on board were Alphonse Milne-Edwards, Léopold de Folin (1817-1896), who wrote a narrative of the expedition and described several new molluscs, and the ichthyologist Léon Vaillant (1834-1914). Longer expeditions followed to the same region (1881, 1882), the coastal region of Portugal (1881, 1882), the Mediterranean (1881) and the eastern Atlantic from Bayonne to the Canary Islands (1882). In 1883 the Travailleur was replaced by the Talisman, a more modern and larger vessel, which was used on a final expedition to the Sargasso Sea. The fishes collected were studied by Vaillant, who published the results in this volume, which was the first of a larger series of zoological publications. Because of the extensive dredgings in deeper water, many new and undescribed species were caught, and illustrated here for the first time. - Stamp of the Glasgow University Libraryn backside of title page and on one of the plates. Erste Ausgabe. - Nissen, ZBI, 4209. - Dieses Werk enthält die ichthyologischen Ergebnisse einer berühmten Tiefsee-Expedition zum nordöstlichen Atlantik und dem Mittelmeer. Der Paddel-Dampfer Travailleur segelte am 17. Juli 1880 von Bayonne und erkundete die Bucht von Biskaya. Ungefähr zwei Wochen später kehrte sie in den Hafen zurück. Zu den Wissenschaftlern gehörten: Alphonse Milne-Edwards, Léopold de Folin (1817-1896) und der Ichthologe Léon Vaillant (1834-1914). Längere Expeditionen folgten, in der gleichen Region (1881, 1882), der Küstenregion Portugals (1881, 1882), dem Mittelmeer (1881) und dem Ostatlantik von Bayonne bis zu den Kanarischen Inseln (1882). Im Jahre 1883 wurde der Travailleur durch den Talisman ersetzt, ein moderneres und größeres Schiff, das auf der letzten Expedition zum Sargasso-Meer verwendet wurde. Die gesammelten Fische wurden von Vaillant studiert, der die Ergebnisse in diesem Band veröffentlichte. Wegen der umfangreichen Bergungen auch in tieferem Wasser wurden viele neue und unbeschriebene Arten gefangen und hier zum ersten Mal illustriert. - Seiten mehrheitlich unbeschnitten, Tafeln alle mit Seidenhemdchen.
