Roman Bronze Bull Striding
Item Details
Description
Rome, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. A fabulous solid-cast bronze bull, captured in the midst of motion, striding forward with his head slightly turned to the right, the animal's details veristically delineated with rippling musculature, a swishing his long tail, a ridged dewlap, ears horizontal below his curved horns, and a generally natural stance. Red marble stand. Size: 3.5" W x 2.75" H (8.9 cm x 7 cm)

The bull has a significant history in the ancient world, with representations from every culture, from the Minoans, to the Egyptians, and to the Greeks and Romans. The bull was central to the Roman's cult of Mithras with their central tenant of tauroctony, the sacred slaying of the bull.

Provenance: ex-German private collection; Gorny & Mosch, Munich, December 2012
