Description
1713 1ed Originum Juris Civilis Thomas Jefferson Library! Gravina LAW
RARE work in the Thomas Jefferson Library!
A bore is a man who deprives you of solitude without providing you with company.
– Gian Vincenzo Gravina

Gian Vincenzo Gravina was a 17th-century Italian jurist most-known for his principal work “Origines Juris Civilis.” Gravina is responsible for questioning many arguments of absolutism. In this treatise, Gravina shows his thought toward the problems with public law, a thought that was discussed even before Montesquieu addressed it years later.

This work helped define the beginning of the Age of Enlightenment. Gravina looks at the ideals of right and reason, division of political powers, and limiting powers of the state. While Montesquieu was famous for articulating and clarifying the theory of separation of powers, Gravina can be credited as laying the groundwork for this theory which has been included in numerous nation constitutions.

This title is also known to be read by Montesquieu and is in the Thomas Jefferson Library Collection. (Sowerby 2203)
