Item Details
Description
These six volumes with 368 beautiful hand-colored botanical lithographs is Thomas Moore and Henry Honywood Dombrain's The Floral Magazine: comprising figures and descriptions of Popular Flowers. The work was published in London by Lovell and Reeve between 1861 and 1867.

There are 368 originally hand-colored plates of flowers with accompanying text. Plates in volume 5 are mis-numbered, but this is as issued. The plates in volume one were by Walter Fitch with the remaining volumes illustrations by James Andrews. The work is bound in leather in a near period half morocco gilt over marbled boards. These are the first 6 volumes of the work (typically complete with 10 volumes). It is a rare and lovely botanical periodical.

Henry Honywood Dombrain (1818?1905) was a British botanist, mycologist and cleric who specialised in the study of ornamental flowering plants. Thomas Moore (1821?1887) was a British gardener and botanist. He served as Curator of the Society of Apothecaries Garden from 1848 to 1887.

Provenance: Merthyr Guest bookplate
