Description
1796 1st English ed Vendee War French Revolution Turreau

A rare first edition book on the history of the Vendean War, during the French Revolution, by Louis-Marie Turreau. This English edition was popular in England during the late 18th-century as the memoirs highlighted the French rebellion of those living near Vendee, as the actions created an apparent weakness in Catholic and Royal Armies. Turreau was extremely critical of the military plans and embraced the conflict that helped devolve the Generals.

“We look forwards with interest to some narrative of the remaining incidents until the complete reduction of these preserving partizans, and the execution of their chiefs.” (Monthly Review).

According to Smollett’s ‘Critical Review’,
“These memoirs appear to have been drawn up principally with a view to the vindication of General Turreau. In any other view, they are scanty and superficial. Except for the character given of the Vendeans, and the topographical description of the seat of the Vendean war, the historian will find little to interest or assist him….The author explains at considerable length the causes to which the Vendeans were indebted for the successful war they carried on against troops and, when fighting with the English, Austrians, and Prussians, rarely experienced a defeat.”
