Eva Zeisel, an extremely rare “Zeisel Ware” test piece with a stylized bird painted by Eva Zeisel, Monmouth Pottery, Western Stoneware Company, Eva Zeisel Fine Stoneware, Monmouth, Illinois, circa 1953-1954. The underside with Bette Cooper’s taped yellowed card reading in pencil “Zeisel ware / Many of these Plates are sample patterns never made in a production run.” With the word sample in light pencil. Dia.: 11 in. (28 cm). 1620-105
Provenance: Estate of Bette Cooper
Note: Bette Cooper, co-author of Monmouth Western Stoneware (1983), was an unofficial archivist for the factory and collected examples of these works, including test pieces, as they came off the line. Her collection included numerous rarities. On this line, see Scott Vermillion, “Eva Zeisel Stoneware and Ironstone.” in Eva Zeisel: Life, Design, and Beauty, 2013, pp. 102-109.
