Description
Donated By: Donick Cary, Emmy-Award winning writer/producer (Letterman /Simpsons / Parks and Recreation /Silicon Valley)
Pre-Columbian, Mayan Territories, El Salvador, Copador, ca. 550 to 900 CE. An attractive Mayan Copador polychrome terracotta bowl adorned with three whimsical monkeys painted in red and black against a tan slip. Similar examples depict monkeys with round net-shaped bodies chasing one another while playing the traditional Mayan ballgame. Here each monkey is chasing its own respective red ball around the bowl, and their bodies are orange, circular, and have a round eye-shaped design in the center. Above is another register containing several Copador type pseudo-glyphs in red and orange against a tan slip. Monkeys have always been fascinating for their human-like behaviors and antics which seem to parody us. For this reason, in the Pre-Columbian world, monkeys are believed to serve as mediators between humankind and the supernatural realm. Size: 7.5" W x 3.375" H (19 cm x 8.6 cm).
Provenance: private D. C. collection, California, USA. D. C. is an Emmy Award winning Hollywood writer and Executive Producer, collected before 2000
