Description
Northern/Western Europe, ca. 1300 to 1500 CE. A gorgeous cast iron belt buckle composed of three parts: two tall posts with vine-shaped flourishes from which project loops and an oval central piece with two twisted curves made to hook into the loops. Incised on the flat surfaces is a dense network of plant-like motifs. Small areas of gilding mark the loops. Belts were an integral part of the medieval costume, used to hold in place a tunic, trousers, leggings, or hose. Belts were a necessity, but also decorative, with metallic ornaments that dangled from them. Sometimes people even wore two - one leather and functional, the other metal and decorative - purely for fashion reasons. Size: 5.25" W x 3.75" H (13.3 cm x 9.5 cm); 4.25" H (10.8 cm) on included custom stand.
