Description
**Originally Listed At $1500**
Western / Central Europe, Franks, ca. late 6th to 7th century CE. An exemplary iron belt buckle boasting mesmerizing geometric decoration of silver niello and 3 bronze rivets. Belts were essential to early medieval dress; they served the practical function of holding weapons and tools and their fittings could vary in terms of material, decoration, and size, making them excellent indicators of wealth and status. Possibly worn by a man or woman, this buckle's elaborate decoration was created by fitting narrow twisted strips of silver into engraved patterns on the iron. A full belt typically consisted of a buckle, a counter plate opposite the buckle, and sometimes a rectangular plate placed in the middle of the belt at the back for decoration. This richly ornamented piece would have been of great value to its elite owner, so much so that it likely accompanied the owner to the afterlife! A gorgeous piece quite literally loved to death! Size: 3.1" L x 2.2" W (7.9 cm x 5.6 cm)
Cf. Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession number 17.193.98 and 17.191.223.
Provenance: East Coast collection, New York Gallery, New York City, New York, USA, acquired before 2010

Condition
Prong is stuck in place impeding function of belt. Some peeling and minor losses to iron niello, as well as expected abrasions, commensurate with age. Otherwise, intact and very nice with great remaining niello decoration. Rich patina throughout.
