Description
Ancient Near East, Western Asiatic, Persian Empire, ca. 2nd to 1st millennium BCE. A delicate bowl, crafted from hammered bronze, with a slightly-ovoid body, tapered rim, and flared lip. Most likely used as a ritualistic phiale for pouring libations, vessels like this were used often for religious ceremonies and other forms of votive offering. Size: 5.125" W x 2.25" H (13 cm x 5.7 cm).

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-North Rhine-Westphalian private collection, acquired before 1970s

Condition
Minor hairline cracks along rim, and age-commensurate earthen deposits throughout. A large circular blue-green area inside of bowl cavity was caused by a secondary vessel of perhaps of high copper content resting in place.
