Description
Near East, Byzantine Empire, ca. 500 to 900 CE. A cast lead bread stamp with dense lettering around its edges and the remains of a rectangular motif in the center. A large handle rises from the back. Similar stamps were made for pressing into a loaf of uncooked bread; sometimes they were used to identify the consecrated bread for the Holy Eucharist. Size: 3.1" W x 1.9" H (7.9 cm x 4.8 cm)
