Description
Five assorted menus from events honoring African officials at the White House. Included are two luncheon menus, dated March 13, 1962, and three dinner menus dated May 22, 1962. All menus are 6.5 x 4" and on cardstock with beveled gold edges, have the Presidential Seal stamped in gold on the front and detail the cuisine and wine pairing that was served during each meal. Some menus show evidence of spillage and spotting due to use.
On March 13, 1962, President Kennedy hosted a luncheon for President Ahmadou Ahidjo of the Cameroon.
On May 22, 1962, President Kennedy and First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy hosted a dinner for the President of the Ivory Coast and Madame Houphouet-Boigny. Mrs. Kennedy had the American Ballet Theatre perform "Billy the Kid" in the White House Cross Hall following dinner.
These items come directly from the Hirschy family. Lieutenant Hirschy was Supply and Logistics Officer for the Military Aides to the President and Officer-in-Charge of the Navy Mess in the White House during both the Kennedy and Johnson administrations. His duties also included taking care of the President’s needs on overseas trips, aboard the presidential yachts and at Camp David. Lt. Hirschy served in the White House from May 1, 1961 through May 31, 1965.
