Description
From the Department of the Navy, this set of Senior Officers Mess Dinnerware contains a coffee cup and two saucers, all engraved with the Navy's Seal. Sometimes known as "restaurantware" for its rugged characteristics, US Navy China has deep cobalt blue and gold stripes and gold Department of the Navy seal with an eagle clutching a fouled anchor. The saucers are 6'' and 5'' in diameter, the cup is 3.75''. and the demitasse is 2.5'' in diameter and 2.25'' tall.
The White House Mess, run by the US Navy, is located in the West Wing of the White House and its tables are open to important senior officials. Lt. Hirschy, as Officer-in-Charge of the Navy Mess in the White House during both the Kennedy and Johnson administrations, was in charge of making sure the Mess ran smoothly, and would have had access to these dishes. Lt. Hirschy, who served in the White House from May 1, 1961 through May 31, 1965, also was responsible for taking care of the President's needs on overseas trips, aboard the presidential yachts and at Camp David.

Lieutenant Hirschy was Supply and Logistics Officer for the Military Aides to the President and Officer-in-Charge of the Navy Mess in the White House during both the Kennedy and Johnson administrations. His duties also included taking care of the President’s needs on overseas trips, aboard the presidential yachts and at Camp David. Lt. Hirschy served in the White House from May 1, 1961 through May 31, 1965.
