Description
This original acrylic on board piece by artist Tom Palmerton is titled "Landscape with Hawk". Measuring 24" x 48", this piece is in good condition and is signed by the artist in the lower left corner.
Thomas D. Palmerton was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa December 9, 1932. He received formal training at the Kansas City Art Institute from 1955 through 1959. He taught for awhile at the Kansas City Art Institute before returning to Nebraska where he taught at the Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha and at the University of Omaha from 1963-1966.
Painting in a style showing latent Andrew Wyeth influences, Mr. Palmerton has worked extensively in both acrylics and in watercolor. He seems especially at home in the watercolor medium. His subjects range from figures seeming small in large prairie landscapes to "as found" depictions of discarded artifacts withering where they were abandoned by persons now long gone. A rusted bucket framed by a coil of rusted barbed wire hanging on a nail, an old worn jacket, a hunter in a duck blind and a vacant doorway or an empty room are the stuff of his images.
Palmerton has been a prolific painter of Nebraska landscapes in winter. His snow-covered hills and valleys are both haunting in their cold vacant expansiveness and at the same time almost warm in their promise of rebirth and abundant life in an imagined coming spring. Though people may not be present in most of these images, there is usually something in each that gives us a sense of human presence not far away.
Palmerton has won entry into numerous juried exhibitions including those of Watercolor USA at the Springfield Art Museum (Springfield, Missouri), American Watercolor Society Annual (New York), Audubon Society Annual (New York), National Academy of Design Annual (New York) and at the Joslyn Art Museum Biennial (Omaha, Nebraska).
He has had numerous one-person exhibitions in such diverse places as Billings and Helena in Montana; in Fort Worth, Texas; Detroit, Michigan and in his primary places of residence, Omaha, Nebraska and Kansas City, Missouri. His work is in at least two museum collections.
