Description
This is a very old and field used Mask from the Vuvi ethnic group, central Gabon, Africa. A carved wooden mask with white and red kaolin clay pigment, and classic treatment to the eyes and brow, with a simple raised linear design from the lips to chin. Such masks were used during the Bwete initation rites which included Iboga rituals and masked dances. The mask measures 14 inches tall, not counting professional display stand which is included. Ex Collection Prof. Charles Bordogna, previous curator of the SMA Fathers African Art Museum, and author of several publications on African Art.
Condition
Very well weathered and worn, one area of repair on back edge, overall good/fair condition.
