A Lovely vintage to antique Wooden mask from the Mitsogo peoples, Gabon, Africa. A very finely carved example of the style of masks worn during Bwiti initiation ceremonies. a initiation ceremony performed by both Babongo, Fang and Mitsogo using the hallucinogenic root bark of the Iboga,a plant used for spiritual enlightenment and used to solve problems of any kind of nature. This mask was conceived in classic form, kaolin clay and mineral pigments accent on the face, and the form is rather dramatic.Note the deep well handled interior surface, worn regalia holes and well worn edges. I am typically skeptical of this region's masks, however the wear and patina is rather convincing on this example, suggesting at least some ceremonial use. It is also worthy of noting this is a living tradition still being practiced, so, it may be a late but authentic example.The mask itself measures 13.5 inches x 9 inches, I will also include a metal display stand.
