Description
Uniform of the United States Army 1774 - 1889. [United States Army]Nelson, Henry Loomis.. Volume I. Washington, D.C.: the Quartermaster General by Lieut. Colonel M. I. Ludington, [1889]. Illustrated by 44 chromolithograph plates by H. A. Ogden, plus three additional plates from volume II, with slightly trimmed margins; stubbed in on linen backing. Chromolithographed by G. H. Buek & Co... Henry Alexander Ogden was an illustrator and genre painter, known for his paintings of colonial and military life in America. He was born in Philadelphia and studied there at the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League in New York, where he spent the rest of his working life. He became a member of the Society of Illustrators in 1911 and his works are in several museums. The Quarter-Master General commissioned him to illustrate in paintings the U. S. Army's uniforms from 1775 to 1906, which were then used in these color plate books. Henry Loomis Nelson was an American journalist specializing in history and politics. He was a frequent contributor to "Harper's New Monthly Magazine." This is the outstanding American work on the subject, and nobody has replaced Ogden as the ultimate artist authority on this subject - Bennett p. 85.
