Description
Central Europe, Germany, ca. 19th century CE. A tall, glazed ceramic pitcher with additional applied ceramic details. The vessel is tall, with a body that corsets in halfway up its height before bulging out again and a neck that flares out slightly at its top to form a wide spout with a protruding lip that prevents spillage. The pitcher stands on a wide, round foot. The ceramic has been glazed a grey-white with deep blue bands of color around the neck, foot, and corseted mid-section. Dense polka dots of the same blue cover the upper bulge. A thick handle emerges from the back of the neck and joins the vessel again low on the upper bulge. The surface has large applied ceramic decorations around the two bulges and neck. The most striking of these is a bearded face immediately below the lip that is reminiscent of Odin or some other pagan god imagery, which was a theme in 19th century German art. Made for holding beer. Size: 7.25" L x 5.85" W x 11.15" H (18.4 cm x 14.9 cm x 28.3 cm)
