Silk with multi-colored silk threads, inside with silk lining, four fabric buttons and loops at the front. China, 1920s

This black silk Lady's robe shows six finely embroidered roundels with central peonies as well as smaller floral shapes. The embroideries are rich in color, standing out prominently against the dark background. The hems at the lower part, collar and sleeves are featuring a broad, floral band embroidered in blue hues. Light silk bands decorated with flowers and Buddhist symbols such as the swastika, the endless knot or ruyi scepters round off the sleeves.
