Description
MINTONS PATE-SUR-PATE PORCELAIN VASE BY LOUIS SOLON, 1899, H 10 1/4", W 6", 'JEU DE DAMES':A flask form vase with enameled collar and ring handles at the pinched shoulders; white slip decoration of two classically draped ladies seated at a checkers game whilst a putti looks on. Title plaque below reads 'Jeu de Dames' or 'Checkers'. At the other side, a games board with putti-form pieces surrounded by a scrolling cartouche. Decorated by Marc-Louis-Emmanuel Solon, monogrammed. Impressed MINTONS, year cypher, gilt printed globe mark, and painted numerals 1.8.98 . Reference: Jones, Minton: the First Two Hundred Years of Design and Production, Appendix C, in the list of titled pâte-sur-pâte ornamental ware by Solon, p.339.
Condition
A small dark scratch to the checkboard; slight wear to the gilt at the collar and feet. There is an 1/8" chip at the interior base rim that has been painted over in gold. Ad/TW 9-7-17
