Item Details
Description
Central Asia, India, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A breathtaking Mughal (also spelled Moghal) ring, the setting comprised of 20 karat gold, featuring nine gorgeous stones set to resemble a flower - from top center and moving clockwise: a faceted natural ruby, a moonstone cabochon, a faceted ghomedha, a faceted emerald, a faceted white sapphire, a faceted blue sapphire, a red coral cabochon, and a white pearl, all surrounding a central faceted white sapphire - the shank with a twisted rope motif. According to masterful jeweler Paul Haig, this is a zodiac ring; each stone representing an astrological sign of the zodiac. For example, ruby represents the sun; white pearl represents the moon; red coral represents Mars; emerald represents Mercury; blue sapphire represents Saturn; gomedha represents Rahu; white/yellow sapphire represents Jupiter. Size: face measures .875" L x 1" W (2.2 cm x 2.5 cm); central stone measures .25" W (0.6 cm); US ring size 7.75

According to Dr. Nafisa Ali Sayed's "Mughal Jewellery" the various gems represent signs of the zodiac. She writes, "In contrast to the west, different gems have been recommended to compute with the date and month of birth. The matrix of numerology and signs of the zodiac, in Indian astrology is not simple. A number of factors have been taken into account and a horoscope (Janma Patrika) has to be prepared with the position of various celestial bodies and their influence during various periods of life before gems are advised for wear. However, the navratana (nine gems) is worn by almost all people who can afford it. It is believed that the stones stand for wealth, happiness, renown, longevity, honour and mental peace."
