Item Details
Description
Central Asia, India, Naga peoples, ca. end of 19th to early 20th century CE. A stunning glass bead necklace or possibly a belt, made by the Naga culture composed of twenty strands of mostly white glass seed beads accented with short sections comprised of a few translucent blue-green (and one red) seed beads - amounting to hundreds of beads. Adding a bit of drama to the design are twin bands of textile-inspired passages comprised of black, gold, and white beads arranged in stylized geometric patterns, bordered with rectangular ungulate bone beads followed by white seed beads and larger red tubular beads on the upper end and black seed beads and larger red tubular beads on the lower end. At the nape of the neck are black seed beads on one side, royal blue seed beads on the other, both meeting a macrame and pink button clasp. Still wearable! Size: 35" L (88.9 cm); flat geometric design panels measure 6.5" L x 1.5" W (16.5 cm x 3.8 cm)

The Naga people are a combination of tribes in northeastern India and northwestern Burma known for their artistry, particularly when it comes to jewelry. During special rituals on their calendar, men and women dress in ceremonial clothing and ornaments, including stunning necklaces like this one.
