Romare Howard Bearden (American, 1911-1988). color lithograph, ed. 56/175, signed "Romare Bearden" lr, 24 1/2 x 33 3/4 in., framed "Louisiana Serenade" is from Romare Bearden's JAZZ series, 1979. Bearden is widely recognized as one of the most creative and original visual artists of the twentieth century. He experimented with many different mediums and styles throughout his prolific career which celebrated the black American experience. During the politically tumultuous 1960’s Bearden began creating collages made of cut and torn photographs found in popular magazines that he then reassembled into visually powerful statements on African-American life. Romare Bearden died in New York City on March 12, 1988. In their obituary for him, the New York Times called Bearden "one of America's pre-eminent artists" and "the nation's foremost collagist."[1]; The Great Dane Collection, Philadelphia, PA signed C.O.A. on verso
