Bio: Romare Bearden was an African-American artist whose prolific career includes vibrant collages (which he is most famous for) as well as paintings, prints and photographs. Growing up in New York City which a family that was heavily involved in the Harlem Renaissance, Bearden was also exposed to the experience of African-Americans in the South as he spent summers with his extended family in North Carolina. With the assistance of the GI Bill, Bearden studied at the Sorbonne in Paris, which influenced his work and pushed it to be more abstract and improvisational in direction. His intermittent position as a social services careworker for New York City from the late 1930’s to 1967 exposed Bearden to the struggles of immigrants and those struggling to survive in the city. In addition to the visual arts, Bearden was a writer, scholar, and jazz composer. By integrating new and old materials, Bearden created complex scenes that were often inspired by the African-American experience, mythology and religion.
