Description
Mother of God of Tolga, Russia, 19th century, tempera on wooden board, size 31.5 x 27 cm. The Tolga Icon of the Most Holy Mother of God also known as Our Lady of Tolga, is a wonder-working icon of the Holy Theotokos that appeared to the Bishop of Rostov Prochorus (Tryphon in schema) on August 8, 1314. St. Prochorus later built the Monastery of the Presentation of Mary at Tolga near the site where the icon appeared. The Tolga Icon of the Most Holy Theotokos is commemorated on August 8 and July 18. The icon represents the half-length figure of the Holy Virgin, and the sitting figure of Jesus Christ. The position of the Holy Virgin’s arms is changed: it was borrowed from the prototype of Our Lady of Vladimir. Christ, as a Child, touches his Mother's face with one hand and presses His cheek against Hers. Her gaze foresees the Passion and She embraces Him affectionately and maternally. The authenticity of every icon is guaranteed. Every icon is sold with extensive written expertise.
