Description
Not a railroad but a mill lantern. These were commonly used in New England mills. The idea is that the cage could be locked preventing a watchman from using the lantern to light up a smoke. The small eyelet on one side of the cage is the locking point on this model. This lantern has "No. 98" stamped on top of the tank on one side and "DEWEY" stamped on the other side. It also has an applied tag that says, "F. O. Dewey Maker Boston". It has real pitting but no rot. The very top has 4 tabs used to hold the top cap on. Two of the tabs have broken off but the top seems to be held well by the remaining two tabs. The 6" barn lamp style globe has "PRISCO No 0" cast across the middle. Both the lantern and globe show signs of old green paint. These mill lanterns took several shapes. Most more closely resemble railroad models but this one is clearly a barn style. It's a lantern oddity.
