Description
Collection of (39) Letters from Chief Justice Warren Burger (1907-1995) to Marvin Sadik (1932-2013), who was Director of the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. from 1969 to 1981. These are from Sadik's estate. They evince a shared love for the arts, there is much discussion of portraits and placements in the buildings in Washington, and many notes of regret that Burger will not be able to attend an event to lend his support. The letters range from about 1970 to 1981, which was Sadik's tenure in DC. All are TLS, many are just initialed, a few are fully signed or have added footnotes in Burger's hand.
Burger was Chief Justice from 1969-1986. Many landmark cases were decided in his court, including school busing, Miranda rights, Roe v. Wade, US v. Nixon, and the maintenance of Checks and Balances.
