Description
**Previously Listed At $250**
South America, Bolivia, ca. 20th century CE. This beautiful sterling silver (stamped .925) aureola or radiance ("resplendor" in Spanish) was created to be mounted on the head of a Santo to represent the figure's holy emanations. Whether affixed to a saint, mounted on a display base, or standing alone, it captivates as a poetic object and conversation piece. This example features a winged angel's head (seraphim) at the center of the headband, flanked by flowering vines and birds. Above are three stylized floral motifs amidst radiating rays. Based on an 18th century design and handsomely crafted by Aymara speaking silversmiths using the same chaise and repousse techniques practiced a thousand years ago by their Huari, Tiwanakan, and Incan ancestors. Size: 8.625" W x 7.125" H (21.9 cm x 18.1 cm) Weight: 93.6 g.
Provenance: ex-Historia Antiques, James Caswell, Santa Monica, California, USA
