Description
Greece, Archaic Period, ca. 6th to early 5th century BCE. A rare find, a cast bronze votive in the form of a labrys, a symmetrical double-bladed axe. Rarely used in battle, the form has been associated with the symbolism of goddesses since the Minoan period at least. This votive example may have been made to give as an offering at a temple to Athena, who according to myth was freed from Zeus's forehead by Hephaestus using one of these weapons. Size: 1.5" W x 1.5" H (3.8 cm x 3.8 cm); 3.2" H (8.1 cm) on included custom stand.
